ALOHA VISUALS by Alex Kilauano
I’m a Native Hawaiian filmmaker from Kailua, Oʻahu. My work is shaped by where I come from and the culture I was raised in. Storytelling has always been part of that—passed down, shared, and lived—and it’s what drives me as a filmmaker.
I first picked up a camera filming skate videos with my friends in Kailua. Working part time at 808 Skate and part time shooting their skate films. That curiosity grew into something more serious when I moved to Santa Barbara to study film history and production at Santa Barbara City College. I later transferred to Cal State Long Beach, where I focused on cinematography and directing, graduating in 2014 with honors in narrative film. The day after graduation, I began an internship at Surfer Magazine. I stayed on and eventually became the video director, a role I held until the magazine closed in October 2020 due to the pandemic.
Documentary, commercial lifestyle and surfing sit at the center of my work. Filmmaking is a craft I’m always refining, with a focus on honest and authentic stories that go beyond the surface.
